Diskit Monasteryis the largest and oldest monastery in Nubra Valley., founded in 14th century by Changzem Tsera Zangpo. It is also known as Diskit Gompa. It is one of the most attractive tourist attraction in Ladakh because of the 106 ft tall Maitreya Buddha statue. It belongs to the Gelugpa sect ( Yellow Hat) of Tibetian Buddhism and has many Buddha statues, images of guardian gods and a huge drums. Diskit Monastery has some Mongolian influence as well, it is said that once there was a demon near the monastery which was an evil anti-Buddhist being, he was being killed at the monastery but it is said that he was resurrected many times before his death and today, his wrinkled head and hand are said to be kept in one of the temples in monastery
Diskit Monastery is 116 km from Leh, which lies beyond the snow-clad khardung la. The best to reach Diskit from Leh is by hiring a cab/taxi or by bike
