Likir Monastery also known as Likir Gompa is one of the oldest and well maintained monasteries in ladakh. It is a well known Buddhist monastery. It is around 62 Kms to the west of Leh. The monastery was contracted during the reign Lhachen Gyalpo the fifth king of Ladakh
Likir Monastery is 62 Km from Leh and is located at the west of the Leh town after crossing Nimmu and Basgo plains. There are two important routes from Leh, one is the Manali-Leh route (473km) which remains open only from July to September and other is Srinagar-Leh route (434km) which remains open from June to October. There are many local buses available to reach the spot or else you can hire a cab.
The best time to visit Likir Monastery is during the celebration of the annual festival Dosmochey, which is celebrated in the 12th month of Tibetan calendar. You will find music, ritualistic dances, food, traditional sports and many more things. The roads of Leh to Likir is open during winter, so you can plan a trip to Likir Monastery from Leh in winters too. But the best time to visit this beautiful place is between June to September because after November all the routes are closed due to heavy snowfall.
