The Stat Tso Lake and Lang Tso Lake are twin lakes located at the Pensi La Pass at the Zanskar Valley. The two lakes are separated by about 200 meters only. They are located at and altitude ot about 14,435 feet. Since they are far from Leh the lakes are less popular for visitors. It would take atleast two days to reach these lakes, but they are worth a visit.
The Stat Tso Lake & Lang Tso Lake are located about 369 km from Leh. Since the lakes are far from Leh the journey needs to be split into two days. The distance and route map to reach the lake is given below.
Day 1: Leh to Kargil (217 km)
The journey from Leh to Kargil via the NH1 is the amazing part of your visit to the lakes. The road conditions are super and offer a lot of sightseeing. One can spend a full day of sightseeing with lot of these monastery visit and landscpaes and rivers and so on to keep you occupied for the full day.
Leh – Nimmo (35 km) – Saspol (42 km) – Nurla (58 km) – Lamayuru (32 km) – Budhkharbu (35 km) – Wadoo (29 km) – Chhoolatsay (27 km) – Kargil (12.5 km)
A lot of accommodations are available from 1 star guest house to 5 star hotel which you can consider as per your budget.
Day 2: Kargil to Pensi La Pass and then to Lake (155 km)
The second day of the journey offer spectacular views in terms of landscape but the roads are not in good condition after Rangdum and hence may take some time to travel. The route map and distance is given below.
Kargil – Sailskote (24 km) – Sankoo (17 km) – Tongul (37 km) – Rangdum (51.6 km) – Stat Tso and Lang Tso Lake (37 km)
Any time between June to September is a good time to visit the Stat Tso and Lang Tso Lake.
